RoadTrip: PCT: lets talk Yellowstone in July; PCT indecision

9:30AM 4/19/2011
Where are you?
I hope you are alright and get this. Let's talk about meeting up at Yellowstone in July.

Hi Sandy, (and Peter in the middle...)
Firstly, thanks Peter for trying to get hold of me on behalf of Sandy
- sorry I hadn't responded to that inquiry...  although I was tempted
to snap back about the implication that Sandy & I hadn't been in
contact since the Death Valley trip - why, we've hiked together etc.
just before you and her went on your 2nd trip down there this
spring... though I haven't talked to her since - assuming you and her
would be quite busy traveling...  But, mainly last few days I've been making a big push to try to get that one loose end of mine finally tied up...

Anyway, also still hope to get back down to SW San Diego County -
maybe leaving as soon as this Sunday, although there's still much to
resolve about HOW I'm actually going to do that hike...   Plan to
visit my daughter in Woodland this Saturday to hopefully work out some
details about how she could help "support" me by shipping "resupply
packages" etc to post offices along the route of the trail, and she is
trying to convince me to do it without the car - and I'm not yet sure
I'm confident enough to do it without the car, although admittedly the
car would be a major complication and risk.  Problem is, I don;'t
really have anyone who would be willing to drive down there and
"rescue me" if for some reason I had to cut short, and the pub trans
or rideshare or hitchhiking alternatives seem "scary" to me at the
moment.

But I have been looking at train and bus schedules to San Diego
county, and Rideshare sites like Zimride - and Craigslist.  A lot of
people are offering or looking for ride to a concert event "Coachella"
(yes in Coachella near Indio) this weekend, which would be "in the
area for me except just a bit premature...Quite a few people going to
San Diego, and there is a bus from El Cajon near San Diego to Campo
where I would want to be by the end of April (except, again, I had
hoped to do some more low-elevation parts - e.g., either side of hwy
10 just east of Banning, and the Cajon Pass Area NW of San Bernardino,
eastward from there for a bit while the trail stays at 3000-4000ft at
the edge of the Mojave skirting the NW slopes of the San Bernardino
range to Lake Arrowhead.  Peter, would you by chance be interested in
doing that section near the beginning of May?  Take a look at the Lake
Arrowhead area - there's a hot springs along the PCT just north of
there (though personally I wouldn't touch that for fear of catching
the nasty strain of "cooties" reputed to be there - don't want to be
hiking with a case of Menningitis!)  Anyway, the PCT from Pine Canyon
Rd S of Wildwood - across the Cajon Pass, eastward to Lake Arrowhead,
then maybe a few day-trips in that area - I was trying to see whether
I could do that witha bicycle stashed at Lk Arrowhead and bicycle back
down to car parked at Motel at the Cajon Pass.

Anyway... I suspect I'll be lingering up here a few days into next
week, unfortunate because I'm missing my window to do some of those
low-elevation sections of trail before it gets really hot...

As far as Yellowstone goes, I expect that would happen after I meet up
wit hthe CNPS folk going to the Ruby Mts in NE Nevada toward the end
of July. I'd be continuing from there to Yellowstone afterwards, so,
beginning of August would be the window to shoot for trying to meet up
there.

I have another Dr's appointment in SRosa mid-July, just before I leave for the Ruby's.
This means my original plans of wandering around the Pac NW this summer (already
truncated by my new plans to inser the PCT into that agenda...) is
probably infeasible.  So I'll likely just take longer on the PCT -
maybe do a bit of the Southern Sierra from Tehachapis north as far as
I have time for.

So... tell me what you've been up to and any updated plans.

Gary,
I have been away much of the last six weeks, and I have another short trip leaving tomorrow. I am not planning on long drives for a while, and probably will go next to Utah later in May, so cannot join you on the PCT at this time. Don't count on hitching, the roadside trailheads are often in little travelled places. I think you have to coordinate the rides with other hikers; cant you contact them through a website for through hikers?
Peter
