PCT: arrived at Paradise Cafe, weighing options over San Jacinto

Rebecca,

Sorry about my garbled attempt to leave a msg the other day.  And sorry about the vagueness of my plans at the moment making your "job" difficult. (At this point I don't have any immediate need for supplies, until I get a more permanent spot to stash my car, and am able to plan another "extended" hiking session.  Immediate future (next week or two, seem like short one - three day sections involving some car shuttles.)   But thanks so much for making yourself available to help, and thanks again for what you've already done!

I'm currently in a Denny's in Hemmet (west of Idyllwild / San Jacinto) having just bought an external disk drive to download my picts off my cards, as I was running out of room, and since I had no clear next itinerary, no time to send them to you & back...

Terry & Steve "delivered" my car to me at the "Paradise Cafe" near Anza where I arrived from the trail yesterday around 3pm.  We talked a bit there about arranging some kind of two-car shuttle that might benefit both of us - they want to finish a section they missed on their hike a month ago - the section between Idyllwild and Big Bear lake - which drops down out of the San Jacinto's across highway 10 (a very hot stretch) and up into the San Bernardino's.  They have a time-window between this Friday and next Thursday to accomplish that, and I will likely be dropping them off at the south end of that section and then positioning my car near hwy 10 and then when they finish that one-day section, joining them with one car to Big Bear Lake and doing a southbound walk back to hwy 10.  Since I will be gonig slower than them, they will leave my car at hwy 10 for me when I get there (after "borrowing it" to shuttle back to retrieve their car at Big Bear lake, and then leaving for home to meet their time-constraint.

I am also trying to set up a car& bike shuttle to independently do the SanJacinto's - I've arranged to be able to leave backpack at the Paradise Cafe for a day while I park my car near Idylwild and then bicycle back to Paradise Cafe and leave my bike there for a few days while I backpack up to my car.  Then for the northern half of the San Jacinto's I'lll stash my bike near hwy 10, park my car at the bottom of the Tram that goes up the Mt., take the tram with backpack to top, hike down to my bike, bicycle (with backpack?) to Palm Springs.  This latter scheme needs some "checking the feasibility of".  And, I may yet put together a simpler shuttle - maybe with help of one of Terry & Steve's friends who lives in Hemmet.

Otherwise, I've been having a pleasant hike so far.   I've downloaded the track logs from your Garmin, and am a bit confused at what I've got.  I had reduced the "ferquency" setting for the logs and set it to "auto", thinking that might invoke the behavior I was expecting.  But I still need to understand what actually happened. the track segments are of shorter duration that I expect (eg - though I thought I had log "on" for 8-10 hrs per day, I get significantly shorter sections, as if the log "quit" soon after starting...  Puzzled!

I also had taken some waypoints at my extended rest-stops, and ampleased that they store the time in the "comment" field, so I might be able to use this info to more precisely reconstruct track logs using an "interpolation" approach.

I'll follow up with more - probably after Terry & Steve & I have formulated more solid plans.

Hope all is well with you.
